The Local Area
Wester Ross in the North West Highlands of Scotland is an area of stunning loch and mountain scenery combined with beautiful sandy beaches and wide open spaces. Wester Ross stretches from Lochcarron in the south to Ullapool in the north. If you are seeking to escape from crowds of people and busy roads, then this is the place!
Seabank holiday cottage is situated in the small hamlet of Aultgrishan, about 8 miles west of the village of Gairloch. The road out to Aultgrishan is largely single track and passes the villages of Big Sand and North Erradale. (It should also be noted that the bridge on the private road into the property has a 7.5 tonne weight limit.)
Gairloch is the largest village in Wester Ross and can be reached by road from Inverness in approximately one and a half hours. In fact, Gairloch is really the loch itself, the community comprising the communities of Charleston, Auchtercairn and Strath. It has a good selection of shops and places to eat as well as a harbour where a number of businesses offering wildlife cruises operate from. Locally caught seafood is regularly available to purchase at the harbour. There is also a small museum and an art gallery. There is a nine hole golf course in Gairloch, with views overlooking the loch itself.
The nearest train station to Gairloch is at Achnasheen, 29 miles east. This is on the line between Inverness and Kyle of Lochalsh. Public transport links, as you might expect, are rather sparse.
Close to Seabank can be found the stunning Loch Maree, Loch Ewe and the world famous Inverewe Gardens.
